The You Only I Know

You can't choose whom you fall in love with. Before I met “her,”' I never thought I’d be the kind of guy to believe in such a cliché.

When my date finally arrived, I had to catch my breath. Shigeru wore a light blue top and a long white skirt. Her exposed arms revealed slender shoulders. Her long hair, though I knew it was a wig, looked great on her. "Hey, I almost didn't recognize you," I said.

   “Does it bother you?”

“Not at all. You look very cute,” I said.

Despite being assigned male at birth, Shigeru was every bit a girl. Even her voice sounded like one. I discovered her true self accidentally, and I confess, I took advantage of that knowledge. I asked her out, and here we were.

We stopped at a café for lunch before heading to a movie.

Later, we took a stroll through the local park. “You know how to spend a perfect Sunday,” Shigeru said. If you had a girlfriend, I am sure you would make her happy.”

“I am on a date with you now,” I replied. “Why bring up someone else?”

“Hiroki, I am not a real girl. You know that, right?”

I paused, leaning in closer for a good look. “I see you, and I’ve never seen a more beautiful girl in my life.”

Shigeru blushed, her face turning a soft pink. She’s so cute, I thought.

As a man, it took all my willpower not to kiss her right then. “Now look at me,” I continued. “The person in front of you is the one who’s fallen in love with you.
