House For One

To this day, I cannot forget the time when Hotaru visited my architecture firm ten years ago.

“Hideki-san, I want you to build me a house that keeps me far away from the world,” she said. “I have this sickness that makes it impossible for me to live without love. My impulses have already led me into five abusive relationships. I need a place where I can live in peace and not fall victim to bad decisions.”

Being an architect, building something unique was a dream come true. So I seized the opportunity when Hotaru gave it to me. But I must admit, professionalism wasn’t my only motive.

After five years, the house was complete.

“As you can see, the house sits on an overhanging cliff above the ocean. The location shields you from the world while offering you a good view of the sea. The delivery area is separated from the main gate and is only large enough for things, not people. While the long interior passages would encourage your daily walking exercise, the distance to the exit would discourage you from leaving. All the rooms are spacious enough for you to live alone comfortably, but not enough for guests.”

“It’s everything I asked for,” said Hotaru. “A house big enough to fit me, but not one person more.”

I was ready to say goodbye.

“Hideki-san, won’t you stay with me?” said Hotaru, taking my arm. “I think I’ve fallen in love with you.”

Thinking back, I couldn’t refuse immediately—not because of her small arms clinging to me, but because of my weakness as a man. “Please stay,” Hotaru pleaded. “I’ll let you do whatever you want with me. I won’t resist even if you hit me.”
